A 37-year-old patient from Yuanjiang County, Yunnan Province, China complaining of headaches and a bad taste in his mouth. Doctors found a 4ins blade buried in his face.

They say it had been in Li Fu's face for four years without his knowledge, since he was stabbed during a robbery in 2006 while working as a cab driver.

Doctor Xu Wen, vice-director of stomatology at Yu Xi City People's Hospital, said: "We were amazed to see such a long blade in his face.

"And it's even more amazing to think that the blade had been there for more than four years and the patient was still living without too many problems."

He is now recovering after surgeons removed the blade, which had penetrated his tongue root, muscles and brain, in a complicated four hour operation.

Luo Zhiwei, a surgeon at People's Hospital of Yuxi said he had never seen anything so bizarre in his entire career.

1.96 million couples divorced last year in China

A total of 1.96 million couples applied for divorced last year in China (a 14.5% increase from 2009), far more than the number who got married (1.2 million) in the world's most populous nation, state media reported.

China's divorce rate has risen gradually at an average of 7.65 percent a year since 2003 when the law regulating marriage was amended, simplifying both marriage and divorce procedures, said the report published late Sunday.

Before, in many areas of China, couples who wanted to divorce had to get a written certificate from their workplaces or neighbourhood committees before the split could be finalised, it added.

Some lawmakers in China, shocked at the country's high divorce rate, have called for a return to those practices, but so far the amendment has remained untouched.

Also contributing to higher divorce rates is rising wealth so Chinese men and women have more money and are more independent, the report said.

The southwestern province of Sichuan had the highest divorce rate last year, which the report attributed partly to a high concentration of people working away from home, leading to couples being separated for long periods of time.

'Mask face' boy from China

Kangkang, from China’s Hunan province, is being dubbed as “mask face” baby. Kangkang, 14 months old, was born with a double face, a congenital deformity called transverse facial cleft, also known as face horizontal cleft.

As the pictures showing here, Kangkang’s transverse facial cleft condition make him look like wearing a mask on his face, which in fact is not the case .

Mother Yi Xilian and her husband used to work together in an electronics factory in Huizhou, southern China's Guangdong province. However, since she was pregnant Yi quit her job to go home and wait for the birth. It’s unclear what caused this poor toddler to have such an rare cleft

Mrs. Yi said she underwent 3 B-mode ultrasound examinations and one color Doppler ultrasound examination at two diffident hospitals in Guangdong and her hometown Xiangxiang County during the pregnancy and all doctors told her the unborn baby was ok.

During pregnancy she didn't take any medications except some abortion prevention agents prescribed by the doctors at Xiangxiang Women and Children's Hospital.

"My family didn't allow me to see my son at the beginning, and I pleaded with my husband to let me have a look. Before they passed me the baby, they told me 'don't be sad, don't be sad', but when I saw my son, I collapsed," said a crying Yi.

Professor Wang Duquan of 163 Hospital said there are many possible reasons, like disease infection during embryo development, taking medications during pregnancy, and so on.

Professor Wang said it's the first such case he ever met. "It's different from a cleft lip or cleft palate; it's a facial cleft. Not only his face muscles are cleft, but the inside bones are cleft."

Professor Wang said judging from the current situation the boy is only suffering from the facial cleft, and his intelligence should be normal.

Yi said 20 days after the birth she took Kang Kang to visit a big hospital in Changsha, where doctors told her that the surgery would cost at least 300,000 to 400,000 Yuan. "We couldn't afford such a large amount, and the kid is already 1 year old and we couldn't wait any longer."

Professor Wang said Kang Kang at least needs to receive two surgeries.

Kangkang was born in March , 2009. He now is treated at the People’s Liberation Army’s Military No. 163 Hospital only after his family accumulated enough money for the expensive correction facial surgeries.

All the best to you Kangkang!

Fish Boy from China born with fish scales skin

This 14-month-old boy in eastern China apparently suffers from a rare genetic disorder in which his body cannot cool itself, according to the Daily Telegraph. Song Sheng, reportedly was born without pores in his skin and started to develop scales shortly after birth.

Locals call him 'fish boy', reports the Telegraph. Doctors say because the toddler cannot sweat or lose heat through his skin, it peels away in fish-like scales.

To control his body temperature, his family puts him in baths of ice.

Song Dehui, his father, said: "He is in a lot of pain all the time. And if we don't have enough ice he gets a fever."

There's no known cure for the condition, called Lamellar ichthyosis, doctors have reportedly told the child's family.

His father said, "It can be treated but not cured, so we are praying for a miracle or a folk medicine cure."

13 year old girl who looks like a grandma

Zara Hartshorn, 13, lives at home with her mom, sisters and a brother. There is, of course, the usual rough-and-tumble and sibling bickering one would expect in a large family. But, Zara said, she feels safe and loved. No one makes fun of her, unlike every time she steps outside her front door, where she's scared.

She looks like a grandma because she suffers from lipodystrophy, a disease that causes the supporting fatty tissue under the skin to crumble even while the skin continues to grow, often at an alarming rate.

Zara Hartshorn’s mother Tracey also suffers from this disease, as do two of Zara’s siblings. Zara looks older than her 21-year-old sister Jolene and 16-year-old brother Tommy.

Zara was, she said, a confident little girl. Then at age 5, the bullying started. "The kids started calling me names," she said.

Zara went home in tears. "I asked my mom why I was different," she said.

As she grows older, Zara's anxiety has increased. She lives in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, in a hardscrabble, deprived neighborhood. Life here is tough. For her, it's tougher.

"I want a face-lift," she said.

Her mother had surgery when she was a teenager in an effort to smooth her wrinkled face. But, Pollard said, it didn't help much. "My expectations were too high," she said. "I thought I would look like a normal kid ... but I didn't."

Poor baby boy believed Hindu 'baby god'

Poor baby born abnormal but sadly worshipped as a god.

Januk Ghimire, the 32-year-old mother of the baby, has had to become used to visitors because thousands have descended on her village since Risab was born in January.

Thousands of people are flocking to a remote and mountainous village in Nepal to see a malformed baby which many are now worshipping as a God.

Suffering from a rare abnormality, baby Risab has a headless "parasitic twin" attached to his abdomen and was born with four arms and four legs.

His impoverished parents say all they want is for Risab to have a "normal body".

They are worried that some see the baby not as a blessing but a curse - the reason why monsoon rains are late.

To many locals, he is seen as a miracle and revered as the reincarnation of Ganesh, the Hindu elephant God, whose common forms have several arms.

Poor Chinese girl with snake shaped spine to have corrective surgery

Above are x-rays taken  on January 31 of Xiao Rong of Chongqing, China, who has a severely twisted spine.

The 14-year-old is to receive surgery to correct her snake-shaped spine this February at Xinqiao Hospital.

Xiao developed a twisted spine when she was just 9-years-old.

“My grandmother found my shoulders are not on the same line,” she says. Her spine became more and more twisted, which makes it difficult for her to breathe as the twisted spine presses on her right lung.

Doctors have planned a two-phase surgery on Xiao - the doctors intend to cut off part of the twisted vertebra, and then the second phase of surgery is to make the snaky spine straight.

“The risk is very high,” says a doctor at the hospital, “as any mistake or unpredicted factors can make her paralyzed for her remaining life.”

Record number of young Americans jobless

The U.S. economic recession has taken a particularly heavy toll on young Americans, with a record one out five black men aged 20 to 24 neither working nor in school, according to research.

Teenagers have found it significantly harder to get a job since the recession began in late 2007, with black youths and young people from low-income families faring the worst, wrote Andrew Sum of Northeastern University in Boston, a employment researcher commissioned by the Chicago Urban League and the Alternative Schools Network.

"Low-income and minority youth, who depended on part-time jobs as a significant stepping stone to future employment, have been forced out of the job market and economically marginalized," Herman Brewer of the Chicago Urban League said in a statement.

Overall, 26 percent of American teenagers aged 16 to 19 had jobs in late 2009, said the report, which was based on U.S. Census Bureau data. That figure is a record low since statistics began to be kept in 1948, the researchers said.

Employment counts the number of people with a job as a percentage of the entire work force. By contrast, the unemployment rate -- which stood at 10 percent in December in the United States -- does not include people who have grown discouraged and stopped looking for work.

Joblessness was particularly rife among high school dropouts aged 16 to 24 who were neither in school nor holding a job, the report said. Family income also had a influence on joblessness.

Only 13 percent of low-income black teenagers in Illinois held a job in 2008 compared with 48 percent of more affluent white, non-Hispanic teens.

The "disconnection rate" Americans aged 20 to 24 who were neither in school nor working -- jumped to 28 percent last year from 17 percent in 2007.

Among the proposals the report supported were government-funded jobs programs directed at the young, additional funding to help re-enroll school dropouts, and government-funded expansions of work internships.

Fingertip amputations prompt 1.5 million stroller recall

What a big mistake! About 1.5 million Graco strollers sold at Wal-Mart, Target and other major retailers are being recalled after some children's fingertips were amputated by canopy hinges on the products.

The recall by Graco Children's Products Inc. includes certain model numbers of its Passage, Alano and Spree Strollers and Travel Systems. The Exton, Pa., company received seven reports of children placing their fingers in a stroller's canopy hinge as the canopy was being opened or closed.

Five children had their fingertips severed and two children received cuts on their fingertips. The recalled strollers were made in China and sold by major retailers nationwide like AAFES, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Meijer, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Wal-Mart and other retailers nationwide from October 2004 to December 2009.

In announcing the recall Wednesday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said the strollers pose an amputation and laceration hazard to children when opening or closing the canopy. The government advised consumers to stop using the strollers and contact Graco to receive a free repair kit.

The recall involves strollers made between October 2004 and February 2008. The model numbers and manufacture dates are on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.

This is the second major recall in recent months of strollers that led to fingertip amputations and injuries. Last November, about a million Maclaren strollers were recalled after there were 12 reports of children's fingertips being amputated by a hinge mechanism.

The safety commission is now examining all strollers with the designs that have caused the fingertip amputations, said spokesman Scott Wolfson.

For more information about the recalled strollers, consumers can call 800-345-4109 or visit http://www.cpsc.gov.

Metal nut left in girl's spine during surgery

A girl's intention to return to normal life after a car accident last year stunted when doctors confirmed a 0.5cm nut embedded near her spine, thus may become worse if not immediately removed.

Victims claim that it caused due to negligent attitude of a doctors perform during spine surgery with metal implants using nuts and bolts last year to treat injuries from road accidents a year ago in a famous private hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A worried victim known as Khai Tan Yien, 29, an interior designer, said "I am disappointed with the negligence and irresponsibility of the doctor in treating my injury."

"After the surgery, the orthopaedic surgeon informed me that a nut had accidentally fallen into the operated area, very close to my spine where the metal implant was placed," she said.

"However, the surgeon assured me that the nut is not harmful and can be removed together with the fixture of the metal implant a year later without complications," she said, showing her x-rays and CT scan to reporters.

In October, a day before Tan’s scheduled surgery to remove the metal implant, the surgeon claimed that the fallen nut, which has shifted from its original position, could not be removed as it is located very close to a blood vessel.

Only the metal implant was removed while the fallen nut remained in around her spine. "The doctor said there was nothing he could do and claimed that it would not cause me any problem.

"But I'm worried if the nut may shift around and cause complications," she said. Tan also claimed that she had sought a second opinion from an orthopaedic surgeon in another private hospital earlier this month, who advised her to undergo surgery as the location of the nut might be harmful.

Her surgery is scheduled for today.  Department head Datuk Michael Chong said he would bring the matter up with the Health Minister and asked for all doctors to be more careful.

"We will have to wait for the result of the operation first," he said.

12 year old girl who sneezes 12,000 times a day

A sixth grader from Chesapeak, Virginia, who sneezes as much as 12 times per minute and 12,000 times a day, has baffled her family and doctors. She can’t sit for more than a few seconds without someone saying "bless you."

12-year-old Lauren Johnson caught a cold roughly two weeks ago. The cold eventually went away, but the sneezing stuck around. It only stops when she’s in deep sleep.

"I can't stop sneezing. It goes off about eight to nine times a minute," says Lauren sneezing twice in seven seconds.

One neurologist said that Lauren’s condition could be “irretractable psychogenic disorder,” which could be triggered by stress.

But on a regular day, she can sneezes more than 12,000 times.

World's oldest divorcees at age 98

British couple Bertie and Jessie Wood have become the oldest couple in the world to divorce – aged 98.

The pair ended their 36-year marriage when they were both two years away from their 100th birthdays.

They got married in Elstree, Hertfordshire, in 1972, having both ended previous marriages, before moving to Falmouth Cornwall four years later.

However, by 2008, when they were both aged 97, their relationship faltered and a decree absolute is believed to have been granted subsequently.

According to neighbours of the former couple, Mrs Wood now lives in a care home. Mr Wood died shortly before he turned 99.

Mrs Wood's daughter Pauline Rowe, 65, refused to discuss the split. “It's too hurtful to talk about,” she told the News of The World.

Terence Wood, Mr Wood's son from his first marriage, also refused to comment on the divorce. In Devon last month, a couple married at the combined age of 181 to become Britain's oldest newly-weds.

Les Atwell, 94, and Sheila Walsh, 87, married in a ceremony attended by family and friends. They met four years ago, introduced by Mr Atwell's cleaner.

His new wife explained: “His cleaner told me about Les and I thought he sounded nice but then she told me he's 90 and I thought "oh no, I'm not so sure".

“But when we met, that was it. It was love at first sight.”

The couple, who live in Paignton, went on a two week Mediterranean cruise for their honeymoon, stopping off in Athens, Rome and Barcelona.

The world record is held by French couple Francois Fernandez, then 96, and Madeleine Francineau, then 94, who married in 2002.

Shiloh Pepin the mermaid girl died at 10

The real little mermaid's life is only for 10 years. Shiloh Pepin, who is born with a birth defect called sirenomelia, has died at Maine Medical Center on Friday afternoon.

Sirenomelia, sometimes referred to as mermaid syndrome, is a rare congenital condition in which the legs are fused together and there are severe abnormalities of the bladder and kidney. She survived at birth was amazing in itself.

She appeared on Oprah Winfrey show last month. She answer Oprah's question that she don't mind people call her mermaid. And the funny part is, her mother said she's wonderful but a little bossy.

Earlier this month, her mother, Leslie Pepin, said Shiloh came down with a cold that turned into pneumonia. Shiloh rushed to Maine Medical Center on Oct. 10 and was placed on antibiotics.

Some children have survived sirenomelia by having had surgery to separate their legs. However, Shiloh Pepin could not because she had blood vessels crossing from side to side in her circulatory system.

Because of her mermaid syndrome, Pepin had only one partially working kidney, no lower colon or genital organs and the aforementioned fused legs, fused from the waist down. She had received two kidney transplants, the last one in 2007.

Shiloh was a fifth-grader at Kennebunkport Consolidated School. "She was such a shining personality in that building," said Maureen King, chairwoman of the board of the regional school district. Counselors will be available next week to talk to students.

Ganga and Jamuna the Spider Girls

Ganga and Jamuna Mondal, the conjoined twins support their family with a bizarre circus act - billed as The Spider Sisters.

The 39-year-old pair from Calcutta, India, are of the ischio-omphalopagus tripus type and have two hearts and four arms but share three legs, two kidneys, one liver and a single reproductive tract. They can stand, but they cannot walk and crawl on their hands and feet.

And curious spectators flock to see them crawl insect-like across the stage in their native India for five hours a night - in return for just 26 in wages.

The cash is enough to feed their extended family of 22 for a fortnight. Jamuna says: "People are drawn to us. They think we are strange."

"We don't go out much as we get nervous." Another of the sisters' fears is being separated - after doctors warned it could be fatal.

But US conjoined twins expert Dr James Stein said they COULD survive after testing them in TV documentary Human Spider Sisters - on Discovery at 9pm tomorrow.

Ganga and Jamuna differ in many ways and fight occasionally. Ganga likes fish, while Jamuna prefers meat. In the evenings Ganga likes to read or listen to music, while Jamuna goes straight to sleep. Ganga's favorite actor is Amitabh; Jamuna dislikes him, preferring Akhshay Kumar.

However, the sisters do agree on how they would like to spend their future: they have one husband, Gadadhar, a carnival worker whom they love deeply. When asked which he loves more, Gadadhar replies, "I love both equally." In 2000 the twins appeared in the Kannada-Tamil language film H2o.

Mother sacrificed herself from wasps attack

One year old poor chinese boy has survived from wasps attack after his mother sacrificed herself by covering his body from the attack by her own body.

Unable to outrun the swarm his mother Ying Lee, 24 of Zhengan town in southwest China's Guizhou province, threw herself on the ground in a meadow outside her home and was stung to death as she shielded her toddler son with her body.

When she was found half an hour later by neighbours her entire body was covered with wasps.

Neighbours drove them off using foam from a fire extinguisher after hearing her son Xiang screaming from underneath the swarm of insects that covered his mother's body. She died a short while later on the way to hospital.

Ying's distraught husband Wan, 34, said: "I went out to work in the morning, by the time I returned my beloved wife was gone."

"She had gone out in the meadow with my son - and he was playing as he always did while she worked. He seems to have disturbed the wasps - and realising he was being attacked she grabbed him and tried to run back home.

"Because she was in the open - there was nowhere to get cover so she tried to run back home - but she realised our son was being badly stung - so she flung him to the ground and covered him with her coat and then her own body.

"She gave her life to save him. Although she was stung hundreds of times she did not move.

"Her body was completely covered by wasps when it was found - but my son was still alive - they heard him crying."

Police said the neighbours had used foam from a fire extinguisher and a hose to drive off the wasps and rescue the boy.

A relative said: "She came round briefly as she was being put in the ambulance - we told her that her son was safe. She died on the way to hospital."

Doctors at the local hospital warned it had been a mistake to run and should have covered herself from the start. "It's better to squat on the ground. Running for your life is a bad choice when wasps attack," said one.

Girl with huge hairy skin at most of her body parts

A six-year-old girl has stunned medics after thick grey hair started growing uncontrollably over her entire back and is starting to grown on her arms and face. Until just a few months ago, Li Xiaoyuan, of Fengkai, southern China had just a small birthmark or a mole on her back.

"Doctors told us it was just a birthmark even when it started spreading but now it covers half her body", said her father Li Yan.

The children keep calling her cat-girl and none of them want to play with Li Xiaoyuan. "The poor girl - it breaks our hearts to see her suffer like this," said mother Li Jiang.

Surgeon Dr Lou Zhongquan of Zhaoqing City Dermatological Hospital believes the youngster may be suffering from a rare hereditary disease that has sent normal moles out of control.

"If they were smaller we could use laser treatment but even if we removed these with surgery there is a very strong chance of post surgery haemorrhage," he explained.

The girl’s family are now trying to raise the money to get expensive medical treatment to help their daughter. I hope she will get the remedy and better treatment soon.
