Purple calf born in Serbia
Born in a village near to the city of Cacak, locals insist they have not seen a calf like this one before.
The calf has quickly become the talk of the town and is incredibly popular with young children, who have been visiting the barn in their droves to catch a glimpse of the unusual offspring.
The calf is said to be perfectly happy and healthy and vets have suggested the purple colouring is 'probably a matter of genetics', Serbian news channel PTC reported.
'We were surprised when we saw this calf's colors. So far, no cows in the world have adopted these colors,' said its owner.

Chinese villagers mistake atrophied ape for alien
This ape made a monkey of Chinese villagers who feared it was a visitor from another world.
Locals panicked when Mao Xiping, a housewife from the village of Gezhai, in Henan province, central China, found the scraggy simian stealing cucumbers from her flat.
She thought it was a harmless rabbit, until she noticed it had an 'alien face' and her neighbours agreed it was like nothing they had ever seen before.
Deer stands watch over goose nest in cemetery
A deer has been standing watch for several days over a female goose nesting in a city cemetery, a scene normally reserved for a children's movie.
For at least four days, the buck stood guard near the nest of a Canada goose as she sits on her eggs inside a large urn at Forest Lawn cemetery, home to the remains of President Millard Fillmore and rock icon Rick James.
"He does appear to be guarding the goose, as it were," Erie County SPCA Wildlife Administrator Joel Thomas said. "He's within touching distance of her -- there's no doubt what's going on."

The deer, which he said looks like a buck that has shed its antlers, has not strayed from his post.
Cornell University wildlife expert Paul Curtis says deer and geese usually don't pay any attention to each other.

Cock killed the Fox after four hour battle
When it spotted the “fat” fox sneaking through a fence hole into the farm in the eastern province of Ihsa, the cock lunged at the animal and entered in a pitched battle with it, 'Sharq' said. The cock putting up a tough fight to protect his females.
“The cock is large and vicious, it does not like any strangers to enter the chicken coo, it has large and long claws similar to those of a falcon,” the paper said, quoting the farm owner, Mohsen Ribadi.
“A battle erupted between the two and continued for nearly four hours as the fox was running away and then coming back in the end, the cock reached the fox’s neck and gave it a big scratch, it was a serious wound that caused the fox to bleed until death.”
Is the fox would dare to confront the chicken again after this? :D

Sniffer mice have a nose to detect drugs and bombs
Mice are being trained to detect bombers and drug couriers at airports, as an alternative to dogs, X-ray machines and full-body scanners.
Israeli scientists have created a detector, similar to a full-body scanner but with three concealed cartridges each containing eight specially trained anti-terrorist mice.
Researchers claimed that the mice, which work four-hour shifts, are more accurate than sniffer dogs and x-ray machines. Dogs have 756 olfactory receptor genes, while mice have 1120, resulting in a more acute sense of smell.
Air is pumped into the cartridges every four hours so the mice can breathe. When the mice sense traces of drugs they run to a side chamber where they trigger an alarm.
Inventor Eran Lumbroso, whose company BioExplorers, based in Herzeliya, is hoping a larger company will help with the final stages of development, said: "It is as if they are smelling a cat and escaping. We detect the escape."
Eran conceived the mouse-based explosives detector while serving as a major in the Israeli navy. Along with his brother, Alon, he founded the company and built a device that looks much like an average airport metal detector or full-body scanner.
The device was tested last year on 1,000 shoppers in a Tel Aviv shopping mall when the mice successfully picked out 22 people carrying mock explosives.
The idea may be appealing to airport authorities who feel that body scanners invade customers privacy. Security expert Bruce Schneier told New Scientist, "Animals noses are always a good solution, and the mice don"t see you naked."

Scientists discover amazing creatures in Indonesian sea
Scientists using cutting-edge technology to explore waters off Indonesia were wowed by colorful and diverse images of marine life on the ocean floor - including plate-sized sea spiders and flower-like sponges that appear to be carnivorous.
They predicted that as many as 50 new plant and animal species may have been discovered during the three-week expedition that ended Aug. 14. More than 100 hours of video and 100,000 photographs, captured using a robotic vehicle with high-definition cameras, were piped to shore in real-time by satellite and high-speed Internet.
Verena Tunnicliffe, a professor at the University of Victoria in Canada, said the images provided an extraordinary glimpse into one of the globe's most complex and little-known marine ecosystems. "Stalked sea lilies once covered the ocean, shallow and deep, but now are rare," she said in a written statement. "I've only seen a few in my career. But on this expedition, I was amazed to see them in great diversity."
Likewise, Tunnicliffe has also seen sea spiders before, but those were tiny in comparison, all around one-inch (2.5 centimeters) long: "The sea spiders ... on this mission were huge. Eight-inches (20-centimeters) or more across." One animal captured on video looks like a flower, covered with glasslike needles, but scientists think it is probably a carnivorous sponge. The pink spikes, covered with sticky tissue, appear to capture food as it passes by.
Timothy Shank of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts said his team has so far pored over more than 150,000 high-definition video framegrabs.
"I now feel that there may be at least 40 new species of deep-water coral and at least 50 new species that include benthic shrimp, crabs, sponges, clams, barnacles, anemones and sea cucumbers," he said. Confirmation that a species is new involves a scientific peer review and other steps and can take years.
Scientists used powerful sonar mapping system and the robotic vehicle to explore nearly 21,000 square miles (54,000 sq. kilometers) of sea floor off northern Indonesia, at depths ranging from 800 feet (240 meters) to over two miles (1.6 kilometers).
The mission was carried out by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's ship, the Okeanos Explorer. An Indonesian vessel, the Baruna Jaya IV, also took part, collecting specimens that, together with all rights for future use, will remain in the country.

Caterpillar convoy in South Africa
This incredible convoy is a trail of 136 tiny caterpillars heading off into the bush.
The scene was captured by Jamie Rooney, whose vehicle was held up while the 5m (17ft) creepy-crawly convoy crossed the road in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
The delicate insects were linked by a single thin silk thread on the ground which set their path out into the bush, where they will eventually turn into butterflies. They took about 20 minutes to get across the road safely. ‘It was an incredible sight,’ said the 38-year-old from High Wycombe. ‘We got out to get a closer look and counted 136 caterpillars, all moving together across the track.
Our guide had never seen it before but he’d heard about it and explained they were migrating into the bush, where they would disperse and turn into chrysalises.
‘It’s like the mass migration of bigger animals like wildebeest but on a different scale – and pace.’

Seven legged baby goat in China
A goat with seven legs has been born recently in Jiaoliuhe township, Taonan, Jilin Province in China.
The owner of the goat, a woman surnamed Song, explained that it was a difficult birth but the goat is standing on four of it’s legs and is feeding.
“It was very difficult for the goat to deliver the kid, so I used my hand to pull out. It scared me!” the owner said.
“It is the first time I’ve seen anything like this in 13 years.”
Animal experts, a local biologist Li Chunsheng have said the chances of long term survival are slim.
