Man found woman's head while picking mushrooms

A Japanese man collecting mushrooms on 1,223-meter-high Mount Garyu in Kitahiroshima on Friday at around 1:45 p.m found the severed head of a young woman, believed to be a college student missing in Shimane Prefecture late last month, investigators said.

Hiroshima and Shimane prefectural police are trying to identify the head, suspecting that it belongs to Miyako Hiraoka, 19, a first-year student at the University of Shimane, who has been missing since Oct. 26.

The scene is about 25 kilometers south of downtown Hamada, Shimane Prefecture, where Hiraoka was last spotted, according to investigators.
