Germany to end nuclear power by 2022

Germany on Monday announced plans to become the first major industrialised power to end all its nuclear plants in the wake of the disaster in Japan, with a phase-out due to be wrapped up by 2022.

Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen announced the decision by the centre-right coalition, which was prompted by the crisis at Japan's Fukushima plant, in the early hours of Monday morning, describing it as "irreversible".

"After long consultations, there is now an agreement by the coalition to end nuclear energy," he told reporters after seven hours of negotiations into the small hours at Chancellor Angela Merkel's offices.

"This decision is consistent, decisive and clear."

Germany has 17 nuclear reactors on its territory, eight of which are currently off the electricity grid.

Seven of those offline are the country's oldest nuclear reactors, which the federal government shut down for three months pending a safety probe after the Japanese atomic emergency at Fukushima that began in March.

The eighth is the Kruemmel plant, in northern Germany, which has been mothballed for years because of technical problems.

Monday's decision made Germany the first major industrial power to announce plans to give up atomic energy entirely.

But it also means that the country will have to find the 22 percent of its electricity needs currently covered by nuclear reactors from another source.

Roettgen insisted there was no danger of blackouts.

"We assure that the electricity supply will be ensured at all times and for all users," he pledged, but did not provide details.

Already Friday, the environment ministers from all 16 German regional states had called for the temporary order on the seven plants to be made permanent.

Roettgen said Monday that none of the eight reactors offline would be reactivated. Six further reactors would be shut down by the end of 2021 and the three most modern would cease operation by the end of 2022.

Monday's decision is effectively a return to the timetable set by the previous Social Democrat-Green coalition government a decade ago.

And it is a humbling U-turn for Merkel, who at the end of 2010 decided to extend the lifetime of Germany's 17 reactors by an average of 12 years, which would have kept them open until the mid-2030s.

That decision was unpopular in Germany even before the earthquake and tsunami in March that severely damaged the Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan, prompting Merkel's review of nuclear policy.

Her zig-zagging on what has been a highly emotive issue in the country since the 1970s has cost her since at the ballot box.

Merkel herself has blamed the Fukushima nuclear disaster for recent defeats in state elections.
In the latest, on May 23, the anti-nuclear Greens pushed her conservative party into third place in a vote in the northern state of Bremen, the first time they had scored more votes than the conservatives in a regional or federal election.

The late-night wrangling in Merkel's fractious team saw the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) arguing against a fixed end date for nuclear power, and to maintain two reserve reactors in case of energy shortages.

FDP sources said there would be a contingency plan with one reactor but did not provide details.
Meanwhile the Christian Social Union, the Bavarian sister party of Merkel's Christian Democrats, fought for an exit within 10 years.

Some coalition members had called for a built-in review clause which could have seen the decision revisited, but this was thrown out in the final round of negotiations.

Roettgen said the government had largely followed the recommendations of an "ethics panel" appointed by Merkel after the Fukushima disaster, which called for an end to nuclear power in Germany within a decade.

Development of bio-batteries from bacterial cells

Development of bio-batteries from bacterial cells
The development of practical microbial fuel cells took a big step forward this week. Research conducted by a team of scientists from England's University of East Anglia was published on Monday (May 23), in which they revealed that they had discovered "the exact molecular structure of the proteins which enable bacterial cells to transfer electrical charge."

Eventually, these fuel cells could take human or animal waste and convert it into usable energy.

Scientists possessing this knowledge can now start working on technology for tethering bacteria directly to electrodes, which could lead to much more efficient microbial fuel cells - also known as bio-batteries.

The team utilized X-ray crystallography to determine the structure of the electron-transferring proteins, which were attached to the surface of a Shewanella oneidensis bacterium cell. X-ray crystallography involves focusing an X-ray onto a crystalline item (such as a protein molecule), then determining its structure by analyzing the angles and intensities of the diffracted beams.

17 new pyramids has been discovered by a satellite

17 lost pyramids has been discovered by a satellite survey at Egypt amongst thousands of tombs and ancient settlements.

Scientists made the discovery using infrared images which enabled them to identify underground structures.

The existence of two pyramids have already been confirmed by researchers on the ground.

This cutting edge form of “space archaeology” is being pioneered by a team of archaeologists from the University of Alabama in Birmingham lead by US Egyptologist Dr Sarah Parcak.

The team analysed images from satellite-cameras so powerful they can zoom in on objects less than 1m in diameter on the earth's surface.

Infra-red imaging was then used to identify different materials undeground.

Google wants to kill Facebook with +1?

Facebook knows who you are, who your friends are, and just about everything you and your friends "like" – to read, to buy, to look at – on the Internet.

This scares the pants off Google.

To Valley and tech types, Facebook's collection of data is known as the "social graph."

The reason it worries Google is that increasingly, Facebook is using that data to show users things to read, buy, and do on the Internet before those users get the chance to Google search for those things.

The social graph turns the Internet into Facebook's platform, not Google's.

Again – that worries Google silly. As it should.

So, what is Google doing about it? Many things, including launching new social products, like +1, in hopes of gathering "social graph" information through its own products. Larry Page also recently told all Google employees that their bonuses will depend on Google succeeding in social.

But Google also seems to be pulling another, more clever trick. It's putting together its own "social graph" by scraping together data from others.

How?

Here Comes The Google Version Of Facebook "Likes"

Google is rolling out its +1 buttons for third-party Web sites in a matter of weeks, the company said at its I/O conference this morning.

The service is like the Facebook "Like" buttons that have been everywhere for the last couple of years, only run by Google and the results will tie into your Google social graph, which the company is building based on your Gmail contacts and other info.

The company launched +1 in March as a way for users to recommend Web sites to one another.
Web developer Yvo Schaap briefly found a way to get a +1 button on his site in April, but Google quickly pulled the code.

As Google explained in a session at I/O, Web sites will be able to add +1 buttons in several different sizes, and can tie them into their own site logon systems to keep your own record of which pages your users have recommended.

After enough people have +1'd a page on your site, you'll be able to use Google's analytics system to see anonymized data like the age and sex of people who are recommending particular pages.

(Google won't release this information if only a couple people have clicked on your site because it would be too easy for you to match actions with users.)

Web developers can sign up here to be informed when +1 for Web sites is ready to roll.

See the Tightest Planet Gathering Yet This Century

This is very interesting! Especially to astronomy fans and photographers. Every day this month, about 20 to 45 minutes before sunrise, sky-watchers will get a rare opportunity to watch four worlds - Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter - in the closest planetary grouping yet seen this century.

This, planetary conjunction - astro-lingo for when planets cluster together in the heavens - has provided some impressive sights already. But the early-bird sky show is really culminating this week as they form their tightest grouping yet!

Jupiter, the gas giant and second brightest of the bunch, will glide past Venus on May 10 and 11, making the larger world easy to spot despite it being less than a quarter as bright as the goddess of love. Most impressive is that the two planets will be separated by only 0.5 degrees, which means you could easily cover the starlike pair with just your thumb on an outstretched arm.

Then, on May 12 all four worlds will be clustered within 6 degrees of each other in the dawn sky. That’s equal to the width of 12 full moon disks side by side - quite a pretty sight.

Zamzam water is safe to drink, but maybe not the fake one

air zamzam palsu dicampur toksik
On 5 May 2011 , BBC reported that holy drinking water contaminated with arsenic was being sold illegally to Muslims by UK shops (Muslim bookshops) in Wandsworth, south-west London, and Upton Park, east London, as well as in Luton, Bedfordshire.

Contaminated 'Zam Zam' holy water from Mecca sold in UK

"Zam Zam" water is taken from a well in Mecca and is considered sacred to Muslims, but samples from the source suggested it held dangerous chemicals.

The president of the Association of Public Analysts said he would "certainly would not recommend" drinking it.

"The water is poisonous, particularly because of the high levels of arsenic, which is a carcinogen," said Dr Duncan Campbell, president of the Association of Public Analysts.

The BBC asked a pilgrim to take samples from taps which were linked to the Zam Zam well and to buy bottles on sale in Mecca, to compare the water on sale illegally with the genuine source.

These showed high levels of nitrate and potentially harmful bacteria, and traces of arsenic at three times the permitted maximum level, just like the illegal water which was purchased in the UK.

Dr Yunes Ramadan Teinaz, an environmental health officer who has previously warned about "Zam Zam" water, said it was "a sensitive matter".

"People see this water as a holy water," he added.

"They find it difficult to accept that it is contaminated but the authorities in Saudi Arabia or in the UK must take action," he said. [BBC]

Fake Zamzam water sale thriving along highways

MAKKAH: A large number of illegal foreigners and some Saudi citizens have made selling fake Zamzam water a lucrative profession. They mix the holy water with ordinary water and sell the mixture as pure Zamzam water.

The fake water may have adverse health effects that can be perilous for the users. The sellers of fake Zamzam water are spreading along the highways, around the exits and entries of Makkah, and near the holy mosques. They continue their illegal trade without heeding the concerned authorities that are always after them.

Arab News made a tour of the places where fake Zamzam water is put for sale. The tour started at the central area of the Haram in Al-Ghazzah area, where many people from the African communities practice this illegal profession. They buy new empty gallons in various colors, put a small quantity of Zamzam water in them and fill the rest with plain water. They do the mixing of water in far away places and then bring their products to Al-Ghazzah area with its concentration of pilgrims and visitors. Their selling operation continues 24 hours a day, but they run away and hide whenever a security team is spotted.

In Kudai area, which has a pumping station for Zamzam water, a number of Africans, Burmese and Bangladeshis fill their gallons with Zamzam water. They empty part of the gallons in other containers, fill them with ordinary water, and sell the mixture to the salesmen around the Jeddah-Makkah Expressway. Evidently, they do this illegal job away from the eyes of the passport police.

Along the expressway, particularly near the gas stations around Makkah exits, are some groups of people selling their fake water round the clock. They put their gallons on small trucks parked there, after covering them with cloth. They leave for their homes at night and return next day to continue their job. The Zamzam water may be exposed to direct sun rays and to dust, making the fake holy water unhygienic.

Sellers of the fake Zamzam water may make more than SR400 a day, going up to SR600 during weekends and school summer vacation. A large gallon of the mixed water is sold at SR15, the medium at SR10, and the small at SR5. They buy the Zamzam water from the pumping station at SR2 a gallon.

Consultants and doctors specialized in chest diseases warn against the risk of such water, which may cause various diseases including diarrhea and typhoid. They advise all interested purchasers to buy directly from the filling factory. [Arab News]

Zamzam Water is Safe to Drink

British reports have come out claiming that the Holy water of Zamzam is poisonous and contains high levels of arsenic and other pollutants!

The reports came after BBC London tested samples of Zamzam water*.

The ministry of Hajj released a statement today rebuking the reports and stating that the water is tested regularly by the Group Laboratories CARSO-LSEHL in the French city of Lyon, and who are authorized by the French Ministry of Health to work in the analysis of drinking water.

The latest tests were conducted in March and the reports revealed that "According to drinking water standards in France and based on the analysis conducted on the samples of Zamzam water, this water is fit for human consumption."

The samples that were tested by BBC, might have come from bottled water being sold in the UK as being Zamzam water.

The BBC investigated and discovered Zamzam water was being sold by Muslim bookshops and mini markets around the UK.

The Saudi Embassy in London assured that Saudi Arabia has not exported Zamzam water and that the presence of people in the United Kingdom engaged in the trade of selling Zamzam water is the responsibility of the British authorities in dealing with them.

It pointed out that writing on the bottles the words of Zamzam water does not mean that they contain Zamzam water which is pure and that comes from the source in Mecca.

It's true, not every bottle of water that has Zamzam written on it means it has come from the well of Zamzam in Mecca! It could be water from God knows where and bottled by God knows who!

I think the BBC should have been more patient before releasing the report and should have been more accurate. They should have taken actual samples from the Zamzam well in Mecca! [waleg.com]

Dead Osama Laden image is fake

Once again we are being misled by the american government. And the deception is really obvious!

The image of the dead face of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, aired on the Pakistani TV channel and then used by the British newspaper websites, is fake, the Guardian has revealed.

The current photo showing on different websites claiming to be bin Laden's corpse has used two different photos, which has been used online for the last two years.

The image claiming to show bin Laden's dead body has been on the internet since 2009. Several British newspaper websites used the photo on their front page; however, they were quickly forced to omit the photo as the fake image was published on Twitter.

The Guardian says the fake photo was first used on “themedialine.org," the Middle East online newspaper, on April 29, 2009. The editor had stated that, he could not make sure whether the published photo is genuine or fake.

Since 2009, several conspiracy forums have insisted that the photo was not fake and have accordingly claimed that the al-Qaeda leader was killed.

The real image was taken from bin Laden in 1998 and used by the Reuters news agency.

US President Barack Obama announced earlier on Monday that bin Laden was killed by the US forces on Sunday after he was found hiding in a compound in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, a US official says bin Laden's body has been buried at sea, alleging that his hasty burial was in accordance with Islamic law, which requires burial within 24 hours of death.

This is while burial at sea is not an Islamic practice and Islam does not determine a timeframe for burial.

Analysts are wondering why the US officials have buried bin Laden's body at sea, since they could apply the DNA test on his corpse in order to confirm his death.

FDA Says Breast Implants Linked to Rare Cancer

US Regulatory Agency Warns Both Saline and Silicone
Breast Implant Recipients at Risk

The US FDA sent out a warning on January 26 2011 that women who have received breast implants may be at risk for a rare kind of immune system cancer called anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Over the last 14 years, about 60 women who have breast implants have developed this cancer in the scar tissue where the implant is inserted.

What is anaplastic large cell lymphoma? Imitating metastatic breast cancer and cancers of the breast muscle, anaplastic large cell lymphoma is sometimes called "lymphoma of the skin." It starts around an injured blood vessel just under the skin, and then spreads to lymph nodes throughout the body.

The cells that become cancerous are the white blood cells known as T-cells, specifically T-helper cells. These are the white blood cells that "put the brakes" on the activity of other white blood cells, and when they become cancerous, the immune system generates too many inflammatory hormones. About 50 per cent more common in men than in women, this form of cancer most often follows an insect bite, the malignant T-cells congregating around the bite and spreading on the surface of the skin. The incision used to insert a breast plant seems to have provided a platform for the cancer in about 60 women nationwide since 1997.

The FDA itself states that women who do not currently have symptoms of this form of cancer have no reason for alarm. It's actually very easy to detect this kind of cancer when it occurs in the skin. There is a small, reddish brown area of indented skin surrounded by a lighter margin of redness. The area is jagged and irregular, looking like something many people would call a "nasty bug bite."

Detecting anaplastic large cell lymphoma at the site of a breast implant is a little harder to do, since the inflammation may be closer to the implant and farther from the skin, but there would be a tiny lump, about twice the size of an eraser on a pencil. Blood tests can quickly tell whether there is really a lymphoma.

Sometimes it's enough just to remove the lymphoma. Sometimes it's necessary to use chemotherapy or radiation. The overwhelming majority of people diagnosed with this kind of cancer live 5 years or more, even though the average age at diagnosis is 73.

And of the 900,000 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that have been diagnosed in the United States since 1997, only 60 have been tied to breast implants. The chances of developing a cancer because of a breast implant are very, very small. They just aren't zero. That's why the FDA issued a warning.
