Two-Headed Northern Water Snake Found In Couple's Drawer

Two-Headed Snake Found In Couple's Drawer

Tiny North American water two-headed snake has been discovered in a drawer full of rubbish in Illinois. When Jerry Williamson's wife first told him she had found the scary reptile he thought she was pulling his leg.

But to his surprise she was telling the truth. The couple decided to keep the reptile and don't mind about the terrifying stigma attached to the two-headed Hydra of Greek mythology.

They were worried it would not be able to survive on its own. The Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon sometimes also known as Natrix sipedon) is a large, non-venomous, well-known snake in the Colubridae family that is native to North America. They are active during the day and at night.

New Giant orb web spider discovered

More than 41,000 spider species are known with about 400–500 added each year. Another rare species of 'giant' orb web spider has been discovered in Africa and Madagascar. In the journal Plos One, researchers describe Nephila komaci as the largest web spinning spider, making the largest orb webs known to science.

Only the females of this groups of species are giants, with a leg span of up to 12cm; the male spiders are smaller by comparison, but still large.

Scientists say the female spiders are capable of spinning webs that reach up to 1m in diameter. Orb-weaving spiders are a widespread group which take their name from the round webs they typically spin.

The new spider was identified by Matjaz Kuntner, a biologist from the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and his colleague Jonathan Coddington, from the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.

The giant female was in a collection belonging to the Plant Protection Research Institute in Pretoria, South Africa.

"It did not match any described species," said Dr Kuntner.

In his search through more than 2,500 samples from 37 museums, no further specimens turned up and he assumed the spider must be extinct.

But when a colleague in South Africa found three more of the spiders, it became apparent that they belonged to this same new species.

The discovery will enable scientists to study the evolution of the dramatic size difference between male and female Nephila spiders.

Dr Kuntner explained that the widely accepted theory was that evolutionary pressure was causing female "gigantism", with the females increasing in size in order to produce larger numbers of offspring.

He and his colleague, Jonathan Coddington, from the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, fear the rare spider might be endangered.

Dr Kuntner named the species in honour of his best friend and fellow scientist Andrej Komac, who recently died in an accident.

Dolphins play jellyfish ball in the ocean

Dolphins play ball game in the ocean. And the ball is the 'jellyfish'!

A team of marine biologists were astonished to see dolphins swim under jellyfishes and with a quick flick of their tail shoot it out of the water.

The bottlenose dolphins were caught on video performing the strange activity off the Welsh coastline. One dolphin is seen flipping the jellyfish six feet up in the air.

Jonathan Easter, 23, who saw the dolphins at play, said: "One thing is for sure, they were having fun. There were floating blobs of jelly and the dolphins were flipping them about."

"They swim under the jellyfish, then at the right moment flick their tail up to give it a good 'kick'. They were not always accurate but when they had a direct hit the jellyfish were literally kicked out of the water. We have been studying individual dolphins in Welsh waters for some time but we got more than we expected from this trip."

"These incredible images provide a privileged insight into the lives and behaviour of bottlenose dolphins. But this behaviour has never been seen before and it presents more questions than answers!"

Some of the Barrel jellyfish reportedly died from being flipped. The area has Britain's largest coastal population of bottlenose dolphins.

Every summer, between 150 and 250 dolphins inhabit the waters, which form significant breeding and feeding grounds.

Cute cow fishes in an aquarium

What strange but cute fishes. They are Cow fish, a fish that look alike a cow, have a horn but cannot moo. And they also cannot produce you milk to drink :D

"The longhorn cowfish, Lactoria cornuta, is a variety of boxfish from the Ostraciidi family, recognisable by its long horns that protrude from the front of its head, rather like those of a cow or bull. They are a resident of the Indo-Pacific region and are usually around 10cm (4ins) long. Whilst badly suited to the home aquarium, the cowfish is becoming increasingly popular as a pet." Rattlesnakes conjoined at neck soon be separated

Two diamondback rattlesnakes joined at the neck will soon be separated in a delicate surgical procedure. Expert say that the snakes are connected at the neck by the soft tissue, no bone connected. Also no blood vessel sharing. This is not a two-headed snake because the reptiles do not share the single body. Veterinarians say the snakes cannot survive together, because they're constantly working against each other .
