How plants develop taste for flesh?

Carnivorous plants like the Venus flytrap lure and devour insects to get extra nutrition. But how they managed to develop the complex and energy-intensive structures needed to catch their prey remains a mystery.

The problem is that for natural selection to result in plants evolving into carnivores, every small change has to be beneficial in terms of survival.

A new study has revealed that insect traps are actually more energy-efficient than botanists believed. Drs. Jim Karagatzides and Aaron Ellison of Harvard University's Harvard Forest in Petersham studied 15 different carnivorous plant species to measure the costs and benefits of this nutrition strategy.

They measured the construction cost of carbon needed to grow the trap structures and compared these against the amount of time needed to compensate for it through photosynthesis.

"The most interesting result is that carnivorous traps are 'cheap' to make (at least compared with leaves). Models of the evolution of carnivorous plants have suggested that traps should be 'expensive' structures,” Ellison said in a paper published in the American Journal of Botany.

However, despite their low cost, the payback time for the traps was pretty long, because carnivorous plants have very low rates of photosynthesis. This probably explains why there are not more of them.

Carnivorous plants live in environments like bogs that have abundant sun and water, but are low on nutrients. Getting these nutrients from insects is but one way of dealing with this. Other bog plants like blueberries, huckleberries and cranberries get help from symbiotic fungi to absorb nitrogen.

Brave mouse vs cool cat

The field mouse roars to the cat after it ventured too near to its nest in Swavesey, Cambs, Britain. Rather than run, the mouse squared up to the cat and stood his ground. Eventually the cat got bored and turned away, before the mouse went back into its home.

"It was incredible, the little mouse stood up and seemed to be roaring at the cat," said Wendy Rothwell, 45, who spotted the encounter in her back garden.

"The cat was much bigger than him and could have killed him at any moment but he didn't seem to care.

"He seemed to be prepared to do anything to protect his home. He must be the bravest field mouse in the country."

Seven months pregnant woman raped at home

A SEVEN months pregnant woman was raped by a burglar as two accomplices held her husband at gunpoint, it was revealed yesterday.

Three masked men burst into the couple's home and the beast frogmarched the mum-to-be to a bedroom.

Last night, the 33-year-old victim revealed that the rapist told her "It's your lucky day" as he carried out a sickening assault.

She said: "At that stage I just wanted to protect my baby.

"I was terrified, with it being so late in the pregnancy. I didn't want to get into a fight where they may hurt me or the baby."

Her 39-year-old husband added: "I pleaded, I was shouting, 'She's pregnant, she's pregnant, leave off her. Tell me what you want'."

The gang had produced a metal object wrapped in a bag, which they said was a gun, and put it to the man's head.

They ransacked the house, stealing keys to an Audi TT, laptop, mobile phones and cash.

The crime took place in Finsbury Park, North London, in May last year but police released details only yesterday because the couple had asked for no publicity until the woman gave birth. Two months after the attack, she had a healthy boy.

Cops are keen to trace three men captured by nearby CCTV just before the break-in. Scotland Yard hopes underworld "allegiances" may have changed in the 16 months since, prompting someone to come forward.

Det Insp Robert Pack said: "There is a reward of up to £20,000 and I hope people out there are prepared to tell us what they know."

But cops were blasted for putting the public at risk by not publicising the crime. Ex-Yard commander John O'Connor said: "It was an appalling decision. Thugs who do that kind of thing don't stop and they will have committed further crimes. You must put public safety first."

ANYONE with information should call 0208 345 3865 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Monster-sized egg has been discovered

Chris Schauerman of Honeyoye Falls found an ailing chicken lying in the chicken coup on his farm last week

"I came up to the chicken and I nudged her," said Schauerman. "She was barely able to pick her head up before it fell back down to the ground."

That chicken, known as Roberta died later that night, but not before laying a massive monster-sized-egg.

"I just couldn't believe it," he said. The egg, called Little Roberta, was two and a half times the normal size of an egg, and weighed 138 grams, over a quarter of a pound.

"I was pretty excited when I saw it but also kind of sad because I knew the chicken put forth its last effort to give this egg," said Schauerman.

Schauerman says he doesn't have major plans for the egg, other than to take it to school for show and tell and later make a giant omelette.

507.55 carat diamond found at South African mine

A diamond, chicken-egg-sized has been found at South Africa's Cullinan mine. The diamond may be among the world's top 20 high-quality gems. It was discovered Thursday at the mine northeast of Pretoria, South Africa.

Johan Dippenaar, the company's chief executive said in a statement Tuesday that the 507.55-carat gem was of 'exceptional color and clarity.'

No value has been given yet for the diamond, which weighs just over 100 grams.

The mine also produced the largest diamond ever found, the Cullinan, at 3,106 carats in the rough. That finished stone is set in Britain's Imperial Scepter as part of the Crown Jewels

Electric unicycle by Honda

An electric unicycle has been unveiled by Honda which says will revolutionise the way we get around and allow people to travel to work without breaking sweat.

The technology used in the sleek and silver U3X 'personal mobility device' has been borrowed from the company's famous Asimo humanoid robot.

An internal balance control means that it constantly stands upright. In order to move, a driver simply has to lean in the direction they wish to travel (forwards, backwards, side-to-side or diagonally) and the 'personal mobility' device sets off on its single wheel.

The device stands 26ins (65cm) high, weighs just 22lbs (10kg) and is powered by a lithium ion battery that runs for one hour before needing to be recharged.

It also has foot rests that fold out from the body and can move at a maximum speed of 3.7mph, described by the designers as the pace of a brisk walk.

The unicycle was unveiled in Tokyo by Honda's president Takanobu Ito, who emphasised that the U3-X was still in the planning stages.

"We believe this is the first step in realising the fun of human transportation and expanding that joy indefinitely," he said.

"And if my legs get a little weak, I would like to have one of these around the house. It makes it easy to move about."

Chief engineer Yasuhisa Arai said Honda had no immediate plans to sell the device but was looking into its potential uses.

Woman marries in a wedding dress made from paper

Not long ago an Israeli toilet paper company was commercialized wedding dresses made from toilet paper. Now a Chinese woman has got married in a wedding dress made entirely from paper.

Sha Sha's dress was made for her by her best friend Zhu Zhu, a wedding dress designer, reports New Life Daily.

They have worked together at an advertising agency in Kunming, Yunnan province, for 12 years.

Zhu Zhu said: "When Sha Sha found her Mr Right I decided I would make her something very special.

"As a wedding dress designer I was a bit bored of making gowns out of fabric so I thought: 'Why not make a dress out of paper?' It took me two and a half months."

The dress is made entirely of cotton paper and decorated with silver lines, making it shine in the sunlight.

Sha Sha walked into the wedding venue, a local hotel, with six bridesmaids holding the long, paper lily flower-decorated tail for her.

"I felt very grand, and beautiful. It's super comfortable to wear," she said.

Her groom, Mr Li, agreed she looked beautiful: "We are very happy with the dress - but I daren't touch her in case I tear it," he added.

Man marries four women at once

The man from South Africa, is not just married with 4 women, but all at once! The same time marriage is to save money and prevent cheating.

The women each received rings and a kiss from the groom at the ceremony, which was attended by hundreds of people. Mr Mbhele, in a white linen suit, and his four brides, wearing white princess gowns and tiaras, arrived together in a limo.

South African law recognises polygamous marriages, which are common among several tribes including the Zulus and Swazis, but simultaneous weddings are rare.

Mr Mbhele, 44, a municipal manager in Indaka, said the joint celebration saved money by combining the festivities.

He has already been married to Thobile Vilakazi for 12 years and has 11 children.

"I want her to be happy," he said of Ms Vilakazi. "I think getting married to her for the second time would make her happy since I will be taking in three other wives so this will relieve her in some way."

His "middle wives" - as he described them - are Zanele Langa and Happiness Mdlolo, both 24.

The youngest wife, 23-year-old Smangele Cele, said she was looking forward to marrying Mr Mbhele, even though it means she'll have to share him. She said the wives planned to live separately, with their husband rotating between them.

He said he loved his brides equally and there was good competition among them.

Eight cows were due to be slaughtered on Sunday at the bridegroom’s home for the traditional part of the ceremony.

850 Mostly Blind, Pale Creatures Discovered Underground Australia

Scientists have found 850 previously unknown species living in subterranean water, caves and micro-caverns in Australia.

These insects, crustaceans, spiders and worms are likely only about one-fifth of the number of undiscovered species the researchers think exist underground amid the harsh conditions of the Australian outback. Two species of blind fish and two of blind eels were also uncovered.

"What we've found is that you don't have to go searching in the depths of the ocean to discover new species of invertebrate animals — you just have to look in your own backyard," said researcher Andy Austin, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia. [Scientists say only a fraction of the species of plants and animals on the planet have been discovered.]

Only half of the species discovered have so far been named, the scientists announced today. Generically, the animals found in underground water are known as "stygofauna" and those from caves and micro-caverns are known as "troglofauna."

When it came to the water-dwelling stygofauna, small crustaceans dominated at about three-quarters percent of all species, then insects, all beetles, at roughly one-sixth, with other kinds of creatures making up the rest. For the cave-dwelling troglofauna, arachnids dominated at about one-half of all species, with insects at about one-quarter and crustaceans and others finishing the list.

"Virtually all are blind and completely lack eyes, and lack pigment, so they are pale or white in color," Austin told LiveScience. Often the species are quite delicate, he added, "and the insects in caves often have long legs and antennae — most sense vibration and use chemical senses, as they cannot see in the pitch black."

The scientists found these species during a comprehensive four-year survey of underground water and caves across arid and semi-arid Australia.

Austin and his colleagues suggest these species hid underground long ago due to past climate change.

"Central and southern Australia was a much wetter place 15 million years ago when there was a flourishing diversity of invertebrate fauna living on the surface," Austin explained. "But the continent became drier, a process that last until about 1 to 2 million years ago, resulting in our current arid environment. Species took refuge in isolated favorable habitats, such as in underground waters and micro-caverns, where they survived and evolved in isolation from each other."

So far the surveys have examined only 10 percent of the areas that likely have stygo- and troglofauna, Austin said. They now want to drastically expand their geographical coverage, as well as perform more genetic work to dissect when these creatures diverged from their brethren and see how this matches up with climate change and other geological events.

Although this new discovery is exciting scientifically, it also poses a number of challenges for the conservation of these species, as many of them are located in very remote areas of Australia, where there is significant ranching and mining that could potentially impact their survival.

"This said, it has been environmental monitoring by and support from mining companies that has helped with these discoveries," Austin noted.

The scientists detailed its findings at a scientific conference on evolution and biodiversity in Darwin, Australia, which celebrated the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin and finished Sept. 28.

More ghosts appear in Kent than elsewhere in UK

Lionel Fanthorpe, 74, from Cardiff, has spent the past 25 years researching “supernatural phenomena”, and on Monday publishes his findings.

The highlights include such mysteries as the phantom hitch-hiker who climbs into passing cars, a time-slip road that takes motorists back to the 1940s, and the ghost of a one-legged priest.

One of the best known of 109 reports of UFOs in the last quarter of a century occurred in Scotland in January 1986.

Two police officers claim they saw an orangey-red UFO travelling slowly and appearing to fall to the ground.

They described the object as resembling a flying clothes pole.

Over the same period there have been 50 reported sightings of ghosts or apparitions.

These include seven ghosts of policemen, a phantom monk, and numerous apparitions who appear to hail from Medieval times.

Mr Fanthorpe, whose wife, Patricia, helps him with his research, insists that no reported sighting is so “ridiculous” that it does not warrant further investigation.

Thus he has chronicled 21 reported cases of werewolf sightings and the 17 road phantoms said to have frightened passing motorists.

He has also recorded the case of the young girl who has been spotted wandering down the Caterham bypass, reports of spooky footsteps, and the sounds of movement in empty buildings.

Mr Fanthorpe’s research has also covered the phenomenon of crop circles, most notably in Wiltshire.

He is similarly aware of four poltergeists who terrorise people’s homes, plus reports of big cats roaming through woodland in Leicestershire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

So far the ghost of Dick Turpin has only appeared to a single passenger at Heathrow Airport.

Another Set Of Verses Related To Various Phenomena In The Universe

1 - "Or like abundant rain from the cloud in which is darkness, and thunder and lightning." Surat Al-Baqara (The Cow).

This shows that clouds which give heavy rain are those which hinder light from crossing through. They are also usually accompanied by thunder and lightning.

2 - "Praise be to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and made darkness and light." Surat Al-Anaam (The Cattle).

The verse points out that darkness preceded light in this universe.

3 - "And He is Who has made the stars for you that you might follow the right way thereby in the darkness of the land and the sea." Surat Al-Anaam (The Cattle).

This verse shows in a miraculous and scientific inimitable expression how the stars, and not the other planets, are used in determining directions on land and how they are used by travellers in deserts and seas for guidance. Ancient Pharoahs, Greeks, Arabs and others knew many a thing about stars and their assemblies. They even were able to give some of them, as they were seen in the sky, different names, of various derivations, such as Arcturus, Spica and Sirius. They also gave their assemblies other names, such as the Ursa-Major (The Great Bear), Scorpio, Andromealae, Herculs, Aries, Leo and others, till they reached in number 90, the number of zodiacs.

Because of the revolution of the earth around its circumference once every day, stars move in the sky from east to west. Some of them rise from all the directions of the eastern horizon, then they go high in the sky until they reach the maximum height when they cross the Meridian. Then, they start to go down till they reach the western horizon behind which they disappear. There are another set of stars which go to neither east nor west. These stars draw in their daily movement circles the centre of which is the Ursa- Major. The latter is the star usually found in the north. In the horizon of Cairo, this star goes high at a fixed angle of 30 degrees. It is this which navigators and travellers in deserts take as a guide to determine the north.

4 - "Or like darkness in the deep sea - there covers him a wave, above which is a wave, above which is a cloud - (layers of) darkness one above another - when he holds out his hands, he is almost unable to see it. And to whom Allah gives not light, he has no light." Surat Al-Nur (The Light).

This verse describes in a practical accuracy and literal harmony the storms of the seas, which were not known, of course, to the Holy Prophet.

"Have We not made the earth an expanse, and the mountains as pegs?" Surat Al-Naba (The Announcement).

"Expanse"

here means the flatness of the earth which means, in turn, that it is the shelter and asylum

human beings seek in this world. The other section of the verse, which likens mountains to pegs which keep tents stand firm when fastened to them, is an inimitable scientific example which nobody can know its secrets except those well-versed in geology. After the advancements made by civilisation and after geology has become a factual subject, it has been discovered that without mountains the solid crust of the earth would have been generally unstable as a result of the continuity of disequilibrium between the molten interior of the earth and the high pressures fallen on its solid crust and the denudation factors it is exposed to. This will be discussed later in detail. But now we will give another Quranic verses which bear the same meaning. They are

"And the mountains, He made them firm." Surat Al-Naziat (Those Who Yearn).

"And it is He Who spread the earth, and made in it firm mountains and rivers." Surat Al-Raad (The Thunder)

"And the earth - We have spread it out and made in it firm mountains." - Surat Al-Hijr (The Rock).

"And He has cast firm mountains in the earth lest it quake with you." - Surat Al-Nahl (The Bee).

"And We made firm mountains in the earth lest it be convulsed with them." - Surat Al-Anbiya (The Prophets).

In the last two verses, mountains were clearly likened to firm things put on the earth which have to keep the balance of the earth's crust. This is, certainly, an inimitable scientific elocution of the Quran which was stated centuries ago but had not been known until in our age. There is no wonder in this as the Quran will always remain the immortal and eternal miracle of all times.

In the same meaning

Almighty God says:

"Or, Who makes the earth a resting-place, and made in it rivers, and raised on it mountains." - Surat Al Naml.

"And cast mountains on the earth lest it should be convulsed with you, and He spread on it animals of every kind." - Surat Luqman.

"And He made in it mountains above its surface, and He blessed therein." - Surat Fussilat (Things Made Plain).

The term "above its surface"

mentioned here refers to the solid crust and the rising of mountains and other heights on parts of it.

"And the earth, We have spread it out, and cast mountains." - Surat Qaf.

"And made therein lofty mountains, and given you to drink of sweet water." - Surat Al-Mursalat (Those Sent Forth).

The history of the earth, since its exterior crust began to mass and harden slowly after it was molten resembling the interior of it, is nothing but a series of violent revolutions which occurred on its crust successively, and resulted in more of the cases in the appearance of great sweeping floods which covered big areas in all the corners of the ancient continents. From that time, fossils of living creatures remained buried in the crust of the earth till they were recently unearthed.

This theory is scientifically known as the "Theory of Precession". It may be taken to explain the different stories mentioned in all religions about the "Deluges" among which was that which took place during the days of Nuh (Noah). The distribution of continents and oceans to the globe, as they are seen today, was not the same of olden times. Distribution has been completely changed. The nearest example of this is that which was decided for many reasons by today's scientists that our (Egyptian) northern shores witness a slow process of structure as well as land's creeping towards the north. One of the main reasons responsible for this may be the mud tossed on by the Nile every year and the desert sands winds continually bring with them.

If we want to understand the secret behind floods, or the nature of elements leading to the tottering of land and the overflow and recess of water, we should trace first the source of the disorders which affect the crust of the earth from time to time together with the appearance and disappearance of mountains. The solid crust of the earth is, actually, a very delicate and sensitive balance; but it is one of the more complicated ones. Every spot on the earth is nothing but a scale precisely balanced with any other neighbouring spot. The accurate and correct balance, as it is known, is that whose two scales remain in equilibrium all the time. They remain so as long as weights put on each will be the same. If for one reason or the other weight on one of the two scale changes, this scale, as well as the other, will be affected. This disequilibrium continues until weights readjusted and equilibrium restores to its normal position.

Actually, all parts of the earth's crust are completely balanced with other adjacent parts. While some of them carry high and heavy mountains, adjacent parts will have deep and low lands. Mountains, however, are there simply to keep the earth's balance; and that is exactly what the previous Quranic verses have stated. But it is noted that neither the interior conditions of the earth nor the exterior ones to which mountains and hills are exposed can leave such a balance firm and unmoved. The molten interior of the earth is annihilated by currents which make the solid crust twisted, whatever such currents may be slow. The moment the crust twists and depressed spots formed accordingly, water comes to them. This water we call seas. By the passage of time, beds of such seas become the storing place for heavy and dense weights of sediments caused by denudation factors 1 coming from high areas in the crust, such as mountains and hills. There, fossils of sea creatures lie and the more such weights become heavy, the more sea beds go down. These sediments continue to accumulate until they themselves form the roots of independent mountains. This takes place due to the heavy pressure which falls on the two edges of the descending part of the crust falling in turn on it, which results in the twisting of the crust and its slow rising, in order to keep balance.

This story explains in short the geological revolutions or the movement leading to the formation of mountains. When the first geological revolution took place due to the disturbances which annihilated the interior of the earth since the beginning, reaction to that revolution occurred on the crust of the earth by the appearance of continents and the rising of old mountains on it. Then, and with the work of denudation factors which hewed and splitted mountains and carried, later, their remnants to the deep beds of seas and oceans, disequilibrium took place. Here, the crust of the earth began to restore its disturbed equilibrium and the level of the ocean gradually elevated until water flooded and new seas appeared on the sides of continents leaving traces represented in sediments seen today, as it has been already said. Thus, mountains are to be scientifically considered as weights which have to keep the balance of the crust of the earth and, then, keep it firm without being crushed or destroyed through centuries, during which equilibrium remained steady despite the high pressures which fell down on the interior of the earth and the sweeping slow currents which carried weights. This wonderful meaning is exactly the same the previous verse already quoted has referred to.

"Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth. A likeness of His light is as a pillar on which is a lamp-the lamp is in a glass, the glass is as it were a brightly shinning star-lit from a blessed olive-tree, neither eastern nor western, the oil whereof gives light, though fire touch it not - light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He pleases. And Allah sets forth parable for men, and Allah is Knower of all things." Surat Al Nur (The Light).

This verse brings nearer to our minds, feelings and sentiments some of the qualities of God, the Supreme Deity, in the form of adages. From this account, it will not be difficult for us to realise that light may have another meaning other than that of the "light" or the energies produced by luminous bodies subjugated to the familiar light laws.

God who created the heavens and the earth to be subjects for reflection has prescribed for all such bodies wonderful systems which keep them in order. He also granted them the splendour which made out of them, in the space or in the infinite space, since Creation took place till now, marvellous signs. He created the bodies of the sky either in self-radiant forms, such as suns and stars, among which is our sun referred to by the Holy Quran as the shinning lamp which sends besides light other thermo and non-thermo energies, or planets and moons which follow the former, reflecting the sun's light and sending it to the depths of the space.

The same verse goes on to describe God's light 2 as the space (Or pillar of Tight or an aperture which is the energy) where the beauty and radiance of the Creator show themselves. This picture resembles the light emanated from a lamp, which is the burning wick kept inside a glass, and thrown inside an aperture, which fills both east and west, and everywhere, with radiance. This lamp, with its olive-oil, which was considered by the Arabs as the best of all oils, refers to the fact that all this splendour and radiance are nothing

but a single branch of a blessed tree with limitless good and benefits and whose other branches go to numberless worlds unknown to us.

"Glory be to Him, and highly exalted is He above what they ascribe

(to him)

" "Nothing is like Him."

"Light"

is also mentioned in other verses. They are:

"Allah is the Friend of those who believe He brings them out of darkness into light." - Surat Al Baqara (The Cow).

"And those who disbelieve, their friends are the devils who take them out of light into darkness. - Surat Al-Baqara (The Cow).

In Surat Al-Maida (The Food)

the following appears:

"Indeed, there has come to you from Allah, a Light and a clear Book" 3

"And brings them out of darkness into light by His will."

"Surely We revealed the Torah, having guidance and light."

"And We gave him the Gospel containing guidance and light."
"Praise be to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and made darkness and light." Surat Al Anaam (The Cattle).

The word

"light"

used in the last verse alone may mean the

"light"

which disperses the night's darkness as well as the darkness of the space containing stars and planets. But in the former,

"light"

was used to describe the element which overwhelms disbelief and atheism. It also refers to the miracles and splendour of the Creator. The same meaning is also included in the following verses :

"So those who believe in him and honour him and help him, and follow the light which has been sent down with him - these are the successful." - Surat Al-A'raf (The Elevated Places).
"They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths." - Surat Al-Tauba (Repentance).
"I, Allah, am the Seer. A Book which We have revealed to thee that thou mayest bring forth men, by their Lord's permission, from darkness into light." - Surat Ibrahim (Abraham).
"And to whom Allah gives not light, he has no light." - Surat Al-Nur (The Light).
"He it is Who sends blessings on you, and

(so do)

) His angels, that He may bring you forth out of darkness into light." - Surat Al-Ahzab (The Allies).
"Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam so that he follows a light from his Lord?" - Surat Al Zumar (The Companies).
"And the earth beams with the light of its Lord, and the Book is laid down." - Surat AI-Zumar.

"He it is Who sends down clear messages to His servant, that he may bring you forth from darkness into light." - Surat Al-Hadid (Iron).
"They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light." Surat Al-Saff (The Ranks).
"So believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Light which We have revealed." - Surat AI-Taghabun (The Manifestation of Losses).

"So that he may bring forth those who believe and do good deeds from darkness into light." - Surat Al Talaq (Divorce).

The word

"light"

may also denote God's Book which guides people to happiness, here and hereafter. This is shown in the following two verses

"O people, manifest proof has indeed come to you from your Lord and We have sent down to you a clear light." - Surat Al-Nisaa (The Women).

"Is he who was dead, then We raised him to life and made for him a light by which he walks among the people." - Surat Al-Anaam (The Cattle).

It is obvious that the word

"light"

mentioned here means "existence",. "evidence" and It may also mean all of them, so as to he so clear and easily seen.

"He it is Who made the sun a shinning brightness, and the moon a light." - Surat Yunus (Jonah).

Here, we have to pause a little in order to be able to realise the precision of the scientific expression and to see another side of the wonderful inimitable elocution of the Quran. The Holy Book describes a very important phenomenon. The sun sends to us rays which not only give light, 4 which means illumination, but gives, through a big part of sun's radiation amounting to one half of its energy beamed to us and to the space, heat which warms intervening materails and bodies. A small part of the sun's radiation, which could not be seen nor distinguished, goes out in the form of ultraviolet rays which have effect on living bodies. But the moon does not reflect back from sunrays except the pure light in addition to the radiance coming from it in weak infra-red rays void of any effect on the earth. The Quran gave these meanings on a scientific level. It differentiates between the radiation coming from the sun and that coming from the moon. The former it describes as the light which subsists by itself, while the latter is that which subsists through some other thing. If that is the case, can we say that Muhammad was one of the scientists in order to be able to give such a scientific fact either in meaning or in words? Actually, such a question should be left to obstinate contenders to answer.

"See they not that We in controlling the earth gradually reduce its outlying borders?" Surat Al-Raad (The Thunder).

This verse refers to the fact that since its creation, the earth was diminished along its axis. In this reference, there is an explanation of a universal phenomenon which scientists have not been aware of unless recently. Scientific researches made on the shape of the earth proved that its diametre, connecting both poles, diminishes slowly, but continuously. This was taking place since it was created; and for this reason its shape changed from a sherical shape to an elliptic one.

In mentioning this fact which the human mind cannot understand except after acquiring the knowledge of the recent scientific developments and the most complicated subjects of mathematics, physics and astronomy, the Quran did not mention it in a complicated form, but in very simple one, showing that it is nothing but an intuition which the human mind can easily absorb. This reference is also a proof of the heavenly law's insistence that the perfect and faithful man should be aware of everything in sciences in order to be deserving the ability and quality of reasoning and thinking God has granted him. In so doing, man will be able to change complicated and up-to-date scientific facts to intuitions which everybody should know. The appeal to the achievement of scientific progress could not be stronger than that included in such a Quranic verse. The same meaning was repeated in this verse quoted from

Surat Al-Raad "See they not that We are visiting the land, curtailing it of its sides."
"And go not about in the land exultingly, for thou canst not rend the earth, nor reach the mountains in height." - Surat Al-Israa (The Ascension).

Although this verse means by its superficial linguistic expression that it is impossible for anybody to sunder the earth or go high to reach the top of mountains, yet it exposes to the bright and developed mind how the earth is hung in the universal space with nothing holding it except the omnipotence of God. If any body will not be able to collect from this verse the meanings it really includes, such a man will never understand how he is challenged to go ahead and rend the earth.

Another thing the reader can collect from the same verse. Although the earth is a small planet and although it became possible for the man of our era to go round it in one day or a part of a day, the fact still remains that it is impossible for anybody to rend it. If this is the case why is it so difficult ? It is difficult because of the hard crust beneath which exist thermo-energies and the very high pressures found in the interior of the earth which make the question of rending it a matter of concrete impossibility.

"He created the heavens and the earth in true

(proportions).

He makes the night overlap the day... - Surat Al-Zumar (The Companies).

In addition to the reference made in this verse to the fact that the earth is hung in the space, as it has already been explained, it contains, besides, two new facts. The first is that the shape of the earth is almost sherical such as that of a ball; and the second is that the earth revolves around its axis. This is in addition to the other fact that on the surface of the globe there are always a day and a night at the same time. The inimitable elocution of this verse is evident from the fact that it was revealed to the Prophet even before the Man of the old world could discover America and before Man knew those remote places where such phenomenon could be easily seen and noticed. It is known that while night prevails America, the old continents live in daytime. It is known also that night comes from west to east, enveloping the earth and its atmosphere and covering what was lit by daylight. This is exactly what the verse shows which is a wonder in picturising the shape of the earth, its rotation and the relation between its revolution around itself and the appearance of day and night.

"And the earth moreover Hath He made almost spherical." - Surat Al-Nazi'at (Those Who Yearn).

This verse proves that Almighty God has created the earth in the form of an egg (not completely circular). This fact was endorsed by science which proved again that the earth is really of this shape. Actually, Man's idea about the shape of the earth has developed; after he had believed that it was a limitless flat space, he realised later that it is spherical. Man has come to know that when he thought of going round the earth and discovering its seas and oceans. After the advancement of civilisation and the increase of Man's knowledge of mathematics and astronomy, Man was able to measure and count the diametres of the earth, which led him to the conclusion that it is not completely circular, but elliptic. This, in turn, gave another proof that that Book was really revealed by a Knowing Creator, to Him "falsehood cannot come".

"If you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through. You cannot pass through but with authority." - Surat Al-Rahman (The Beneficent).

By the linguistic expression of this verse it becomes clear that it is not easy for anybody to pass through the heavens except after attaining sufficient power. The same meaning was given in previous verses. But after the advancement and development of sciences and after we have prepared ourselves to travel to planets, it is our duty now to try to go deep in the meaning the verse contains. Actually, the Quran is the Book of all times and it is always up to date. There is no doubt that it was in the knowledge of God that one day Man will acquire a high level of learning and make progress in sciences. And in this age of space it becomes opportune to remind Man that this Book was revealed by God. God's words that man

"cannot pass through but with authority"

have also to be re-interpreted. Previously, they meant the impossibility of doing such a thing. But now, they have to be interpreted as directives and, then, incentives for attempt. This is in spite of the fact that the regions of the heavens and the earth should not be determined by reaching the Moon or Mars. These regions are more distant than this. Formerly, we had quoted similar verses and explained how travellers in the space would expose themselves to destruction in so doing.

Falls Pregnant While Already Pregnant

Doctors have been stunned by a woman with a rare medical marvel - falling pregnant while pregnant. Julia Grovenburg and her husband Todd were shocked to learn she would be giving birth to two babies, but not twins.

The couple attended an ultrasound appointment believing Mrs Grovenburg was just over eight weeks pregnant.

But the scan showed two babies, separated by two-and-a-half weeks - with one clearly more developed than the other.

"[When] she said, 'and baby number two has got a healthy little heartbeat,' - I just started gagging," Mrs Grovenburg told broadcaster KFSM-TV in Arkansas.

"[We were] both in shock," her husband added.

Fanged Frog and Leopard gecko among new species found in Mekong

A fanged frog that eats birds and a gecko with leopard-like spots on its body are among 163 new species discovered last year in the Mekong River region of Southeast Asia, an environmental group said Friday.

Cat Ba Leopard Gecko - This newly discovered gecko has an orange and brown marbled body and a black and white tail. Its catlike eyes and long legs seem like something out of a sci-fi movie. Named after the northern Vietnamese island where it was found, the Cat Ba gecko is related to a number of gecko species that are captured and sold as pets. Scientists are worried that the rare lizard will be overcollected, so they are recommending that it be classified as an endangered species.

WWF International said that scientists in 2008 discovered 100 plants, 28 fish, 18 reptiles, 14 amphibians, two mammals and one bird species in the region. That works out to be about three species a week and is in addition to the 1,000 new species catalogued there from 1997 to 2007, the group said.

"After millennia in hiding these species are now finally in the spotlight, and there are clearly more waiting to be discovered," said Stuart Chapman, director of the WWF Greater Mekong Program.

Researchers working for WWF warned that the effects of climate change, including an upsurge in droughts and floods, threaten the diverse habitat that supports these species. That is on top of traditional threats such as poaching, pollution and habitat destruction.

"Some species will be able to adapt to climate change, many will not, potentially resulting in massive extinctions," Chapman said in a statement. "Rare, endangered and endemic species like those newly discovered are especially vulnerable because climate change will further shrink their already restricted habitats."

Khorat Big-Mouthed Frog - Found thus far only on three remote Thai islands, the Khorat big-mouthed frog is an opportunistic predator. A patient hunter, it lies in wait for its prey in streams, where it strikes birds, insects and other frogs with fangs that protrude from its bottom jawbone. Unlike many other species of frog, the Khorat big-mouthed frog has males larger than females, and they often fight each other.

Among the stars in the new list is a fanged frog in eastern Thailand. Given the scientific name Limnonectes megastomias, the frog lies in wait along streams for prey including birds and insects. Scientists believe it uses its fangs during combat with other males.

Another unusual discovery was the Cat Ba leopard gecko found on Cat Ba Island in northern Vietnam. Named Goniurosaurus catbaensis, it has large, orange-brown catlike eyes and leopard spots down the length of its yellowish brown body.

Lee Grismer, of La Sierra University in California, said he found a tiger-stripped pit viper in Vietnam described in the report while he was attempting to capture a second gecko species.

"We were engrossed in trying to catch a new species of gecko when my son pointed out that my hand was on a rock mere inches away from the head of a pit viper," Grismer said in a statement. "We caught the snake and the gecko and they both proved to be new species."

That gecko species was not included in the WWF report because it hasn't been published in a peer-reviewed journal yet. All the other species listed by the WWF have been described in journals.

Simon Mahood, a conservation adviser for BirdLife International in Indochina, welcomed WWF's attention to the new species and said more could be discovered if additional money is put into conservation and countries make it easier to do field work.

"We are seeing more reports of new discoveries and populations because this region is relatively poorly known, particularly when it comes to cryptic and less fashionable groups like fish and amphibians," said Mahood, whose group this year announced finding the first nest of white-eared night heron in Vietnam and the discovery of a baldheaded song bird in Laos called the barefaced Bulbul Pycnonotus hualon.

On Friday, it announced that it discovered three more sites where the endangered, grey-crowned crocias or Crocias langbianis can be found in Vietnam. The bird has a white underbelly and brown and slate feathers.

Other new species found are a tube-nosed bat named Murina harpioloides that lives in southeastern Vietnam and a new bird species called the Nonggang babbler that favors walking to flying and is found in the karst rainforest on the Chinese-Vietnamese border, an area of limestone fissures, sinkholes and underground streams.

Experts said a range of factors contributed to the upsurge in new species, including better access to regions that have seen decades of war and political unrest and more spending by governments on research to protect and identify plants and animals.

The WWF, which plans to pubish yearly tabulations of newly discovered species in the Mekong, called for increased efforts to ensure new species are protected by preserving the large areas of forest and the free-flowing river networks they need to survive.

Rough-Coated Tree Frog - This frog hails from Vietnam's Truong Son mountain range. Its entire body is covered in rough bumps and its head is longer than it is wide — uncommon for frogs.

Cnemaspis Biocellata - Discovered in 2008, this gecko is a native of the isolated karst peaks of the Nakawan mountain range, which spans the border between Thailand and Malaysia. Among the most brightly colored of the newly discovered species, it has five yellow, butterfly-shaped spots that extend from its shoulders to the base of its tail. Males are yellow and gray, females are light brown. The species is generally nocturnal, and but can be seen during the daytime in the shade afforded by rocks and tree trunks.

Nonggang Babbler - Named for the Nonggang Natural Reserve in which it was found, this Sino-Vietnamese bird lives in flocks of five to 10 and flies short distances (but only when frightened). Most of its time is spent foraging for insects that live between rocks. So far, only 30 of these birds have been spotted.

1,700 animals crammed in car boot

Traffic cops in Italy found more than 1,700 animals crammed into the boot of a car. Inside were 216 budgies, 300 white mice, 150 hamsters, 30 Japanese squirrels, six chameleons and more than 1,000 terrapins.

Police confiscated the entire menagerie and have passed all the animals to nearby zoos while they investigate the driver's links to rare and protected animal smuggling.

"He said he planned to sell the terrapins for 20 Euros each which would have made him a fortune.

"There is no doubt those poor animals were suffering in such a small space," said one officer.

Seems like that man's dream to have lots of money will not achieve yet. Better use a good way than a bad way to get money :)

A newborn massive baby weighing 8.7kg

A massive baby boy was born in Indonesia with 8.7 kilogram (19.2 pound) weight, making him the heaviest newborn ever recorded in the country. He is still unnamed and is 62 centimetres long, was born by caesarean section Monday (local time) at a public hospital in North Sumatra province.

His legs were so big. The process of taking him out of his mum's womb is really tough. His appetite is so strong, every minute with almost non stop feeding. He cry really loud, not as usual baby.

The boy's massive size was likely the result of his mother, Ani, 41, having diabetes. The baby, her fourth, was the only child not delivered by a traditional midwife.

Electric superbike has broken a land speed record

The zero-emissions Mission One electric superbike ridden by Jeremy Cleland became the fastest electric-powered vehicle when it hit an average speed of 150.059mph over two miles. It also beat 70 per cent of the petrol-engine bikes competing at the famous Bonneville salt flats in the American state of Utah.

And at one point, Mr Cleland hit 161mph as he tackled the two runs along a mile-long stretch. The San Fransico-made bike, which will be available next year £42,000, is powered by a 240-volt battery which takes two hours to charge. I hope they can lower the price.

The company plans to sell 300 bikes in 2010, with the first 50 Premier Limited Edition models available for reservation now.

Environmental friendly, save energy, save cost, better than using petrol. And maybe better if combined with solar cell. I hope the oil crysis will end soon if this alternative really works. No more killing just to get oil. Peace and justice for all :)

A Chinese man invents amphibious bike

It's not so sophisticated and futuristic, but riding it is a nice pleasure because we can ride it on a water too. This is a home-made amphibious bicycle, made by Deng Huaibin of Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China, has a foldable airbag on each of the wheel, and seven paddles on the back.

"It rides just like a normal bike on land, but can also be filled with air and rode on the water at speeds of up to five kilometres per hour anytime," says Deng.

It took him more than two years to design and manufacture the bike, at a cost of more than £1,800. It contains more than 300 parts, most of them hand-made from anything he could get his hands on. He used more than 40 car inner tyres to make the four airbags.

Deng hopes to find a business partner to mass manufacture the bike once he's been granted a patent.

"If it gets mass produced, the cost for a single bike will be only around £50," he said.

Spiderman becomes a lizard?

Photo: CATERS NEWS

From a comic and movie superhero becomes a colourful lizard. The lizard in the photo is not being manipulated (not a photo manipulation). It is now the latest exotic pet craze. Mwanza flat-headed agama's vivid blue-and-red colouring, is a lizard that has a body skin colour similar like Spiderman.

Agamas which are native to Kenya can be good pet, as they become tame and docile if handled regularly. But it's a little fussy to take care of them because they require specialist equipment in the UK to maintain their temperature.

It can grow up to a foot long, and a balanced diet for them includes locusts, crickets, mealworms and waxworms. They unable to throw webs, but can change colour – the brightly coloured males will change brown at night or if frightened. They can also run on their hind legs, and can scale vertical walls like spiders.
