The Seven Deadly Sins Vs The Seven Virtues

The Seven Ways To Ruin The World.

In today's modern world troubled by political tensions and socio-economic challenges, harping on sin may make us seem like old fogeys. It must be only antiquated, judgemental people who have not moved on with the times who still care to keep track of these sins. After all these sins are part of a broad spectrum of human emotions and experience. Should we just lighten up and learn to love ourselves, flaws and all?

The seven deadly sins:
  1. Pride
  2. Envy
  3. Gluttony
  4. Lust
  5. Wrath
  6. Greed
  7. Sloth

These old sins have been defined way back during the prophets' time, but these old sins still resonate and apply for a new millenium. Religious men saw these capital transgressions as the most abhorrent of sins and the end point of such admonitions was to drum in how the human capacity to commit such sins would cost them life and grace in every absolute ways. The seven deadly sins are not just about personal damnation alone - they have a destructive real world dimension that hurts and damages all of mankind and costs us in ways that we would not like to even imagine. These sins still have their modern embodiments in the world today and we should give them our full attention. Only then can we understand the harm Man is doing to himself, reflect on our own complicity or indifference, and in turn hopefully readjust or focus our moral compass on what should matter most.

The Seven Ways To Save The World

Virtue ironically tends to get a bad rap in today's world. It is associated with preachy religious teachers, nagging parents, and all that is old-fashioned in the world. It never appears on MTV, is an object of mockery on Gossip Girl and never features in those great crime serials. Virtue is like Bambi: sweet but severely unhip; kind and gentle but ultimately an easy pushover who would never make it in the big bad world.

It says a lot about the world we live in and about our mindsets, none of it flattering, when we dismiss virtue in such an effortless way. When the virtues were formulated, they were seen as necessary counters to the evils of the world. More importantly, these seven virtues were beacons, directing us back to God's grace. Likewise, we see how we may need these guides more than ever in today's morally confused and perpetually conflicted world. These seven virtues are no soft touches that roll over and die at the first sign of adversity. Instead, they have tremendous power and influence, and when taken up by people who care, they offer what may count as the most important solutions to the world's mire of troubles.

The Seven Virtues:
  1. Faith
  2. Hope
  3. Charity
  4. Fortitude
  5. Justice
  6. Temperance
  7. Kindness

As Shakespeare wrote in Measure for Measure,"Virtue is bold, and goodness never fearful." We see that when courageous people and organisations espouse and adopt these virtues as their vanguard to reach out to the needy and the desperate, the world can change for the better. Similarly, we find that when we exemplify the strengths of the virtues, we can leave the world better than when we found it.
