Trapped under earthquake rubble hacks his leg off with hoe and saw

A teenager who is a construction worker trapped in the rubble of a building that collapsed during the earthquake, freed himself by hacking off his leg with a hoe and a saw. He was pinned under a concrete girder which fell on him in Indonesia.

He was working on the seventh floor of a building under construction when the quake hit the city. Fearing aftershocks, the 18-year-old, named Ramlan from Padang, hacked at his right leg with the hoe but it was too blunt to cut through to the bone.

He rang his friend and co-worker Eman on his mobile who brought a saw and helped him finish the amputation in Padang on the isle of Sumatra. Ramlan really shown an amazing fight for survival.

Explaining the horrific situation, Eman said: “I just thought I have to save my friend and I raced back up to the where he was. I did not think of the danger just of the welfare of my friend”.

His story was revealed yesterday by the Disasters Emergency Committee. The quake on September 30 killed 704 and 343 missing. An estimated 1,500 people were injured in the quake, 600 of them severely.
