The ugliest building in Britain

Merseytravel's flagship Pier Head ferry terminal in Liverpool has won the Carbuncle Cup for this year's ugliest building in Britain. A panel of experts made the award from the highly-respected Building Design magazine, a Web site for architects.

The runners-up were both university buildings, the Make's Amenity Building at the University of Nottingham and the Queen Margaret University campus in Lothian, Scotland.

The Carbuncle Cup is handed out every year to the country’s ugliest new building, based on public nominations.

The ferry terminal, designed by Belfast-based Hamilton Architects, was chosen because of the damage the judges said the building had done to Liverpool’s waterfront, which is a Unesco world heritage site.
